Kidney Disease Rates, Number of Nephrology Jobs Rise

Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) August 21, 2008 — According to a study last year that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, chronic kidney disease affects 13 percent of the U.S. adult population. As the rate of kidney diseases go up, so does the demand to fill nephrology jobs.

Nephrologists are physicians who treat kidney disease and administer dialysis. Thanks to factors such as a poor diet and an aging baby boom population, nephrology jobs abound - especially in certain parts of the U.S. That’s according to Foundation Physician Staffing, a healthcare staffing company that helps nephrologists find jobs in areas with high demand.

Some practices hire additional physicians to handle the demand, but hiring extra doctors can add up. Another option is hiring “locum tenens” or temporary physicians. Locum tenens physicians work short-term assignments with medical practices and facilities around the country. A 2008 Review by Modern Medicine found that over three-quarters of the hospitals and medical groups surveyed said they used locum tenens physicians within the past year. Over half say they are currently seeking temporary help; at the same time, nephrologists want more flexibility.

“There is an increasing demand for locums because there are not enough fellows to cover the demand,” said Kyle Rampey, Division Manager for Foundation Physician Staffing. “Also, many of today’s physicians want lifestyle and work flexibility, which means they are working less hours. These trends will more than likely continue as Generation “Y” continues to enter the medical work force.”

The demand for physicians can also shift and change over time, depending on where people live. For example, the western Dakotas and eastern Montana had some of the highest rates of kidney disease in 2000, but in 2005 they had some of the lowest rates.

“In the U.S. the highest demand for nephrologists is in the south and southwestern states–from California to Texas–and in the Ohio Valley,” said Rampey.
